Calcium's Role
Calcium is one of the most important elements in the human body. It plays an
important part in many body processes and regulates many of the chemical reactions
that occur in the body such as contraction and relaxation of muscles, transmission
of nerve impulses and clotting of the blood. About 99% of the calcium found in the
body is stored in the bony skeleton and teeth. If the diet does not supply enough
calcium, the body activates hormones which cause the skeleton to break down and release
calcium back into the blood so normal levels of calcium in the blood are maintained.
Since calcium is lost from the body continuously through the skin and normal daily
excretions everyone needs calcium every day in order to maintain a "positive balance";
that is taking in at least as much as is being lost.
